Project D2 was formed in 2002 by friends Juan Espinosa and Robert Sawyer. The two come from different musical backgrounds and join to create composition greater than the sum of its parts.
Juan Espinosa was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, Fl. In his youth he was most intrigued by the sounds of rock, electronic music, and dance. Having never undertaken formal music training, his first foray into composition came in high school when he would attempt recreating his favorite songs on computer programs. His underlying creativity lead him to attempt his own creations in which he exhibited an uncanny knack for melody and rhythm.
Born and raised in Miami, Fl, Robert Sawyer has had formal music training since an early age. Beginning with classical piano, he then added saxophone, flute, and later percussion to his repertoire. He took up composition when asked to arrange music for his high school marching band and from there studied music theory and instrument voicing. It was in his undergraduate years that Robert discovered DJing and electronic music production.
Project D2 compositions are inspired by the interests of the two members. Often, they will use Juan’s dynamic art design skills to lead pieces, or perhaps memories from Robert’s travels, sociological ideologies, or love affairs. The two are also quite accomplished under their separate production monikers, Juan as Cellmod and Robert as Deviant. Project D2 presents the cinematic and lush jaunts of the human soul and spirit. Incorporating the direction of progressive rock, the depth of trip hop, and the swagger of hip hop, jazz, and Latin music, Project D2 creates an indefinable genre-hopping sound using melody as the building blocks to build the structure of vibe and beauty. PD2 is currently in the studio composing and crafting tunes that speak to the soul and tell the story of the many levels of humanity.
